My Introduction

hello my name is Courtney Brown and I’m a mass communications major at Hillsborough Community College. My interest in mass communication is veered more so towards the journalistic aspect of things. I have always had a deep love and appreciation for pop culture, so i look forward to writing articles about music artist and upcoming movies. I’m looking forward to writing feature stories about local up-and-coming artist’s works. My Dream job is to be a E! Entertainment host. They generally interview celebrities on and off red carpet events, and report the latest celebrity news on their show “The Rundown.” The reporting side of journalism has always appealed to me and I love the entertainment industry. So E! news host a perfect fuse of the both of them. I think that it’s interesting to be able to interview societies most prominent figures and ask them about their craft. My goal at HCC is to perfect my journalistic writing and start a solid foundation of what I want in my career field. After HCC I plan on transferring to The university of Central Florida and major in Journalism. I plan on writing for a local newspaper in Orlando to get comfortable and eventually move to California to pursue my dream job.

Story #4 Newsie Video

The Newsie Video I am using to write my story is “U.S. Movie Theaters Are Facing An Uncertain Future”. The video discusses how the movie theater industry are negatively impacted during this time due to Covid-19. During this time all theater chains have been forced to close. As they close, movies that were schdueled to be released have either postponed or taken a different route with a online streaming global release as the newest Trolls movie this past week. I personally got a chance to visit AMC days before they closed down and experienced watching a movie in a empty theater. After i left and the news of the theaters closing down was announced I wondered, how the future of movie distribution look? The Newsie video provided a little insight about what they planned to do. I will be writing an opinion piece about the change of movie distribution without movie theaters. https://www.newsy.com/stories/u-s-movie-theaters-face-uncertain-future/

blog 9: Newsie.com

After exploring the Newsie website i wasn’t surprised to see that the page was overwhelmed with articles and videos about COVID-19. I personally watched 3 videos on the website that specifically talked about social media and the impact its had from COVID. the video titled “COVID-19 Spurs Record Social Media Use — But Ad Revenue Is Falling” addressed how while social media sights such as instagram and Facebook have seen a large increase in activity they’ve also has noticed that a lot of companies are pulling their online ad’s. Companies and businesses that promote travel, hospitality, and entertainment have been pullings ad’s so avoid being published near COVID misinformation and because it’s easy to pull seeing as Covid is putting a haut to their business. the other video “In Quarantine, Social Media Is The Only Stage In Town” talks about since Covid has everyone inside most people have turned to social media and streaming services to keep them occupied.

Photo Journalism Project

I plan on doing my photo Journalism story on what a Florida theme park looks like during a airborne virus outbreak. I’ve already seen people on social media boast about how the lines are shorter and that there are way less people at Universal Studios due to the Coronavirus. Besides the traction in the park i wonder what guest there are wearing. What precautions the parks is going to take to ensure the safety of the guess. I’m going to Islands of Adventures and Universal Studios for two days while I’m in Orlando and I’m going to attempt to also go to Bush Gardens and Adventure Islands when I get back to Tampa. I want to see if Floridians will take caution of virus since we have two cases here or will there carry on their spring breaks per usual. I want to see how visitors carry themselves in the park. Do they have on face masks. Do they have more mini hand sanitizers on hand than they usually would. Or is anyone at all effected by the possibility of the virus and distracted by the large thrill rides, great food and attractions that Florida theme parks have an abundance of.

The service journalism article that I found interesting is called “The Difference Between Worry, Stress, and Anxiety.” written by Emma Pate at The New York Times. Her article served readers by informing them on what exactly is worry, stress and anxiety, and the proceed to tell them tips on what to do when they are experiencing any of these. The article helped clarify some blurred lines that some people might not be aware of. Recently, mental health awareness has made a huge surge in popularity with most people encouraging others to speak out and seek help if needed. . With anything that becomes popular there could be some dark sides to it. More and more people have been self diagnosing themselves or certain disorders, and exaggerating/mislabeling symptoms. This piece combats this by explaining specifically what each of these reactions is and distinguishing between the 3. What i like about how she wrote this is she explained what each reaction was, How did it work, and lastly what you can do to help with it. My piece is about tipping culture so i think i will follow this same way of formatting starting with what is tipping, how does tipping culture work, and ways to properly tip the people who service you.

Brand Rep to Store Heads

Store manager of the popular young teen apparel store Hollister shares her 12 year journey with the company.

When most people start at a part time job, they start with no intentions on keeping as a career. That’s most definitely not what Bahia Elamm thought.

As the store speaker blasted its signature pop music. The store manager of Hollister’s international location recollects her experiences with the company, what she plans, and advice for anyone else who is contemplating to pursue those full-time positions.

Whist folding down the stores new shipment of florescent colored bikinis, Bahia talks about her start with Hollister “I started with the company in 2008. And when I first started, I wasn’t sure I was going to be here for long. I did like the marketing aspect of it though. That’s what kept me going.” During this time, she was a freshman attending Hillsborough Community College going for a nursing degree that didn’t exactly go as plan. She specifically recalls not liking anatomy and not staying. In the end she received her AA in business at HCC and then transferred to the University of South Florida, earning her bachelor’s in marketing and minoring in international business.

Her education plan was a result in her drive to earn higher positions with the company. “The process was I interviewed for the manager in training that the first step after graduating. Back in the day we had to have a four-year degree. So, I got that, went in for my interview was an AM [assistant manager] for a year in a half almost two years and then I became my first SM [store manager] in 2016.” She explained the benefits of going from part time to full time. “basically, we got paid vacations just like a full time we had a salary at the time paid vacation. They offer dental insurance and stuff like that for a full-time position.”

But Bahia doesn’t just want to stop there. She does plan on going after even higher positions within the company. “My goal Is to be a DM [district manager]one day for the Florida region. I would like to go up so, my next step after this for this location would be to GM [General Manger] in the Orlando area and then from there become a DM.”

She also encourages part time employees to follow in her footsteps and do the same. “So, what we look into from our part time staff is someone who can grow with the company like myself. I grew with the company for 11 years so, it’s exciting when we see people started from the bottom and basically moved our way up. So, that’s who we want to encourage for our future brand.”

Bahia offers advice for part time employees who might not be sure what their next move is. “Be patient, always keep your potions open, and, it’s not always about the money. Everyone always goes for something big in pay and stuff like that but at the end of the day you’re not always happy. So, do something your happy whether it’s here if its anywhere else. Like at the end of the day it’s what you want don’t listen to anyone else.

My Interview Prep

My story focused on the store manager of Hollister at their international mall location. My story had the angle that part time jobs can make carer jobs for those unsure with what they wanted to in the future. To prepare for my interview story i of course had to ask the manager Bahia for if I could interview her. I tried to ask in person whenever we both was on schedule but for the days i worked she wasn’t there. So i private messaged her and asked her if i could interview her and she let me know the day we both was scheduled to work. During my shift she pilled me aside and asked what kinda questions i was gonna ask and i just let her know the angle I was going for with the story. So originally i asked to do the interview in her office but, at the time i was getting off she was the only manager on the floor so instead i did the interview as she folded down swimwear and greeted customers. This turned out to be way better cause i was able to write incorporate that into my story to make it feel more lively.

Interview questions/into

2. What was the process from going from brand rep to store manager?

3. Do you plan on continuing with the company and getting higher positions; or staying as a store manager? Why?

4. What are the requirements for positions higher than Brand rep and their benefits?

5. What did you plan on doing in life before Hollister?

6. What school did you attend? What was your major?

I’d like to interview my store manager Bahia. I work at Hollister and recently a lot of my co-workers have been asking managers how do they grow with the company. I think it’s a question a lot of young people who aren’t sure what they want to do for a career field ask their employers. Other managers have said that they’ve started at Hollister thinking its just going to be summer job and now they’ve been with the company ever since. I think it would be interesting to profile someone who has been with a company for years to provide some insight in the job and also highlight the great aspects of it. I would ask her questions about her position in the company and if she plans on working up the something higher like district manager. I would also like to hear about her earlier days working for the company and ask id she’d ever think that she would be in the position that she’s in now. I want to hear from her perspective as a store manager what she thinks of young employees who wish to move to her position in the future.
